Symptoms

Virtuozzo backup tools provide capability for file-level backups of Exchange databases. The recommended way to backup Exchange databases is to use the built-in Windows Server 2003 ntbackup.exe utility. This utility truncates transaction log files after the backup has completed successfully. That guaranties integrity of Exchange databases after restoration.

Resolution

Exchange server 2003 can be backed up remotely from any physical server which has Exchange System Manager installed.

Also it is possible to backup the Exchange Server without Exchange System Manager, to perform it please follow these steps:

1. Copy ESEBCLI2.DLL file from the Exchange 2003 SP1 CD into the EXCHSRVR\BIN folder on the Virtuozzo host.

2. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

3. Add the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\DLLPaths
   Value Name: Esebcli2
   Data Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
   String: Drive\Path\Esebcli2.dll

4. Make sure that on the Exchange 2003 container the account that performs the backups is given Backup Operator permissions.

After modifying the registry you can use ntbackup.exe on Virtuozzo node to backup Exchange Server 2003 inside conatiners by clicking – ToolsRemote Store.
